A prison is a place where individuals from diverse backgrounds and social standings come together, united by acts society has deemed wrong. Incarceration profoundly impacts inmates, prompting self-reflection and a search for support amid the loss of freedom and separation from loved ones. Religion often plays a crucial role in this process. Christian and increasingly Muslim chaplains provide inmates with recreational activities, discussion groups, and one-on-one counseling. Axel Wiesbrock is one of two chaplains at the Heidering Prison in Berlin, whom I accompanied during his work over several months in 2020.
